"After spending a year stationed in Korea, I came home on leave and went out one night in my hometown of Champaign, Illinois. That’s where I met Maissie at a bar. I ended up driving her home that night, and over the next six days, we spent nearly every moment together — her, her daughter, and me. As my leave came to an end and I prepared to return to Hawaii, where I was stationed, I realized I didn’t want to let her go. I didn’t want a long-distance relationship — I wanted her. So on day six, I asked her to marry me. A month later, we were standing barefoot on a beach in Honolulu, saying “I do.” That was over 20 years ago — and we’ve been happily married ever since, raising three amazing kids together."
